Confident cooking in characterful village inn

A proper village local with flagstones, oak beams, chunky wooden tables, welcoming open fires and a battery of well-kept real ales on hand pump, The Chequers has been around since the 15th century, but it is in tune with modern tastes. When it comes to the kitchen, there are no pretensions or gimmicks, just bang-on-the-money modern ideas, from risotto of butternut squash and sage with Parmesan and olive oil, to pan-fried crispy bream fillet with merguez sausage cassoulet and buttered spinach. You could end with lemon and thyme pannacotta, meringue, blackcurrant and brandy snap.
