A proper village local with flagstones, oak beams, chunky wooden tables, welcoming open fires and a battery of well-kept real ales on hand pump, The Chequers has been around since the 15th century, but it is in tune with modern tastes. When it comes to the kitchen, there are no pretensions or gimmicks, just bang-on-the-money modern ideas, from sauté pigeon breast with wild mushrooms, Jerusalem artichokes, pancetta and frisée salad, to roast chump of lamb with dauphinoise potato, spinach, buttered beans and rosemary jus. At the end, the fresh-baked apple tart with caramel sauce and home-made Madagascan vanilla ice cream is worth the short wait.
