Just a short drive out of Chichester, this 18th-century coaching inn looks out over the South Downs. There's a small patio garden, but most of the action takes place inside, in the large dining area or the snug bar area with a real fire and sofas. The menu includes old favourites such as beer-battered haddock with hand-cut chips alongside brasserie staples such as sole meunière, while starters might include a richly flavoured wild mushroom soup or seared scallops with black pudding and watercress emulsion. Desserts are a feel-good lot such as sticky toffee pudding with bourbon ice cream, or a crumble of pear, blackberry and almond.
