Built in 1742 to mark the centenary of the battle of Edgehill (the first major battle of the English Civil War), the Castle was converted to a pub in 1822. Expect creative modern cooking from a kitchen team that show their mettle with the likes of spot-on scallops with saffron-flavoured fennel, celeriac purée and spicy chorizo, or another starter that combines venison carpaccio with candied beetroot and honeyed parsnips. There might be venison among the main courses, too, pink and tender loin, served with feisty pieces of jerky, while a fishy main course is fillet of Cornish turbot with parsley root remoulade and trumpet mushrooms. Finish with baked Brillat-Savarin cheesecake.
