A russet-coloured village inn in the Vale countryside, The Red Lion offers a pleasingly traditional bar area, with a multitude of hand-pumped ales and old-school furniture, and a more modern restaurant extension with plenty of natural light and well-spaced tables. Up-to-date bistro cooking is the name of the game, beginning perhaps with black pudding fritters in a richly toffeeish caramelised apple sauce. Fish cookery is inspiring, as in hake with tomato and cockle butter sauce and olive oil mash, or there may be roast lamb rump with beetroot and goats' cheese croquettes. The dessert highlight is strawberry rice pudding anointed with local honey.
