Wines by the glass

Formerly known as Drake’s, this high-achieving restaurant stands out among the timbered houses in this well-heeled Surrey village thanks to the landmark timepiece (hence the new moniker) on its Georgian red-brick façade. The name wasn’t the only change that came along in 2017 – Fred Clapperton has been at the stoves since 2012, and now heads up the kitchen team, ensuring that the eclectic offering continues to be driven first and foremost by considerations of flavour. Menus are also rejigged to offer a seasonal carte and a seven-course, whole-table taster option, with vegetarians invited to the party via meat-free versions of both. A meal brimming with confident gestures and on-trend gastronomic ideas opens strongly with pitch-perfect gnocchi in an ambrosial onion broth with fresh watercress and crispy leek rings. Next up, a fish course showcases precision-timed cod alongside plump mussels, pumpkin purée, and a vibrant coconut and ginger foam, followed by beef fillet and sweetbreads with brassicas and horn of plenty mushrooms. An inspired finale unites blackberry textures with hibiscus, apple and shortbread. It all takes place in a light, understated dining room with rustic wood doors and window frames, white tablecloths and modern art on the walls. A heavenly walled garden really comes into its own for aperitifs in summer.
