Like many a prominent chef, Steve Drake took over The Anchor a few years back as an aside to his fine-dining restaurant, unquestionably adding gloss to Surrey’s gastro-pub scene. Dating back to the 16th century, the old brick-and-timber building’s interior sympathetically blends old and new – think beams and exposed brick meets pastel tones and trendy leatherette seating, while a cosy snug, bar and alfresco courtyard add kudos. Light, adept, pretty, modern dishes fit the bill; take openers like duck raviolo served with smoked beetroot and parmesan sauce to chart-topping mains like roast saddle of lamb with white beans, elderflower onions and wilted nettles.
