Not every hotel within striking distance of Gatwick bears the marks of corporate anonymity. A Tudor mansion faced in exquisitely laid red brickwork with original beams and mullioned windows is a sight for travel-weary eyes if ever there was, not least for its garden tables under the trees, and Langshott's Elizabethan interiors – all low ceilings and blazing fireplaces – have been discreetly augmented with the accoutrements of the modern hotel. In the Mulberry Restaurant, views over the grounds are a welcome complement to Phil Dixon's assured country-house cooking. A gentle richness characterises many of his dishes, from a beginner of open lasagne heaped with rabbit, chestnuts, broccoli and tarragon, to mains such as Gigha halibut in truffled dashi stock with celeriac and cavolo nero. Meats are out of the top drawer – the Creedy Carver duck accompanied by gingered pear and hazelnuts, and the aged beef fillet with artichokes and roasted leeks in beer jus. Desserts aim to seduce with lashings of chocolate, caramel, peanuts and coffee in the enveloping forms of mousses, soufflés and parfaits, or there might be chilled cardamom-laced rice pudding with blood orange.
