Theobald's Restaurant was converted from a whitewashed Tudor inn in 1981 and the place still pulls in diners with its consistency and attention to detail. Ancient beams abound and tables are dressed in pristine white. There's a monthly-changing carte, so February's offerings might bring the warmth and comfort of a twice-baked cheddar cheese soufflé with a crisp cheesy top, followed by roast breast and braised leg of Gressingham duck with caramelised apples, golden sultanas and port wine sauce. Locally reared meats and East Anglian fish are the mainstays, and the quality of raw materials is indisputable. Dessert could be a brioche bread-and-butter pudding with prune and Armagnac ice cream.
