Converted from a whitewashed Tudor inn in the early 1980s and newly refurbished, Theobald’s still pulls in diners with its consistency and attention to detail. Ancient beams abound and tables are dressed in pristine white. There's a monthly-changing carte, so a winter menu might bring wild pigeon and pistachio nut terrine with quince jelly and toasted brioche, followed by roast best end of lamb with steamed leeks, roast garlic and Madeira and rosemary sauce. Locally reared meats and East Anglian fish are the mainstays, and the quality of raw materials is indisputable. Dessert could be rhubarb cheesecake with shortbread biscuit and ginger ice cream.
