Overlooking the cathedral and abbey walls, The Angel is celebrating 50 years under the same ownership and is a quintessential Georgian coaching inn. Its facade is suitably handsome and curtained with creepers, and inside, the generous spaces have been overlaid with a contemporary boutique look. The Eaterie's kitchen shows equally 21st-century sensibilities in its repertoire of upbeat brasserie food. Start with a Cromer crab and Granny Smith apple number, with verjus and crème fraîche, then follow with 32-day aged steak with hand-cut chips or fillet of cod dressed with a cockle sauce. For dessert, honey and lemon cheesecake is topped with an oatmeal crumb.
