Fressingfield's timber-framed Tudor guild hall serves as the village inn, but if you want something more ambitious than well-crafted pub classics, head upstairs to the beamed restaurant for creative modern cooking driven by Suffolk's abundant larder. An opener of smoked salmon confit with apple and lemongrass consommé, coriander cress and coconut shows a kitchen aiming higher than the average pub offering. Mains include beef fillet with dauphinoise foam, roasted cauliflower, kale, sauté potatoes and red wine sauce, or slow-cooked hake with oyster mushrooms, potato gnocchi, shaved fennel, mushroom ketchup and lobster sauce. Finish with warm treacle and hazelnut tart with marinated prunes and vanilla ice cream.
