Dating from the 1930s, Enterkine is approached via a tree-lined avenue running through its 300 acres. Three sides of Browne's restaurant have huge windows with views of the estate. It's a handsome room, with high-backed upholstered chairs at clothed tables, a polished floor and swagged curtains. The kitchen adds a gently contemporary spin to classic country-house fare, producing starters like goats' cheese soufflé with Meaux mustard sauce and red pepper compôte, while well-conceived main courses see Orkney beef fillet served alongside beef cheek, parsnip purée, spinach and shallots. Puddings make a satisfying conclusion: perhaps iced honey parfait with granola crumble, toffee sauce and golden raisins.
