At first sight, The Pig is the archetypal English country-house hotel. Inside, however, the style is shabby-chic instead of chintz, the mood is chilled and hip and the whole operation has food at its heart, much of it brought in from The Pig's gardens or foraged from fields and woods. There's nothing fancy going on here, just great combinations, as in a starter of monkfish cheek and scallops with spinach and peas, or a classic main-course trio of chargrilled 35-day aged rib-eye with well-made béarnaise and triple-cooked chips. Desserts continue to toe the local, seasonal line, offering forced rhubarb - poached and in a fluffy mousse - with buttermilk sorbet.
