The Tudor manor house at Lower Swell stands in seven acres of mature grounds, full of cedars, box and yew. A contemporary dining room with modern artworks has a relaxed feel, and elegantly simple farm-to-plate eating is the order of the day. Concise menus offer three choices at each stage. Spring might offer smooth scallop mousse and white crabmeat layered between pasta sheets in chive beurre blanc, then superbly flavourful loin and shoulder of new season's lamb with spring onions, swede, baby carrots and pomme dauphine in a richly sticky jus. A towering crumble-topped rhubarb soufflé with ginger ice cream is the headline closing act.
