A grand stone manor on the edge of Shepton Mallet, Charlton House combines period charm and contemporary style. A menu of modern British dishes includes flavours from beyond the European borders, so steamed tiger prawn with a coconut and green curry foam sits alongside carpaccio of scallop with raspberry and black pepper jelly among main courses. Next up, quail is wrapped in pancetta and roasted, and arrives in the company of thyme mash and roast swede, while fish options might include roast cod with pickled kohlrabi. For dessert try rhubarb trifle with Chantilly or more Asian flavours in the form of rice pudding with chilli and lychee sorbet.
