A gleaming-white decor with pictures printed high on the ceiling beams is the setting for friendly, efficient service and confident modernised pub cooking. Scotch egg is made here with salt cod and a deliciously runny centre, dressed with a swoosh of saffron aïoli, or go for pine-smoked duck with caramelised orange in a chicory and pine nut salad. A hunk of pork fillet is wrapped in pancetta, and the accompaniments all do their bit; potato fondant done in red wine, puréed celeriac, kale with bite, apple gel, Calvados sauce. A wine- and cinnamon-poached pear with mincemeat ice cream is well worth trying. A well-chosen wine list accompanies.
