A handsome red-brick Victorian mansion beside the River Teme with views across to Ludlow Castle, The Cliffe has morphed into a stylish restaurant with rooms with a breezily modern approach to its interior decor. Sporting sage-green walls, bare floorboards and unclothed tables, the restaurant is a suitably contemporary spot for the kitchen’s modern British bistro dishes, opening with ham hock terrine with piccalilli and sourdough toast, followed by Shropshire beef fillet matched with caramelised onion, butternut squash purée and dauphinoise potatoes, or perhaps pan-fried sea bass with fennel orzotto, ratatouille and red pepper vinaigrette. To close, try lime tart with coconut ice cream.
