This former coaching inn has period charm, with venerable beams, log fires and hand-pulled ales available in the bar. On the dining front, though, things are positively 21st century, for the kitchen turns out smart, modern dishes. A typically ambitious starter is roast breast of Norfolk guinea fowl, smoked bon bon and textures of blueberry. Main course might bring forth roast fillet of hake, saffron potatoes, shellfish velouté and turnips, or Springfield chicken, white truffle pomme purée, toasted pinenuts and baby carrots. Desserts run to ‘Tea and Biscuits’ – matcha green tea pannacotta with Rich Tea biscuit ice cream , and the cheese selection is first class.
