A construction company built the rectory, church and village school here in 1840. Nowadays, the church is on the Welsh side of the border and the rectory, now a country hotel, is in England. With sweeping views over the valley, it's a relaxing place, traditionally furnished in country-house style, with striking abstract paintings of the local landscape. The modern Anglo-Welsh cooking uses organic materials in dishes such as guinea fowl, apricot and pistachio terrine with sticky date chutney and toasted brioche, followed by Welsh lamb rump with ratatouille, Parmentier potatoes and rich lamby jus. The finale might be good old treacle tart with custard and poached pear.
