This coaching inn has stood since the 16th century just before the street called Wyle Cop becomes a bridge over the River Severn. Its period facade gives way to a contemporary New England-style interior, with neutral tones and tongue-and-groove-panelling combining harmoniously with the old brickwork and beams. There's a cool bar with a real fire, and a smart but relaxed restaurant that focuses on modern British meals such as whipped goats' cheese, charred pear, endive, candied walnut and watercress followed by Shropshire gold beer-battered cod, crushed peas, tartare sauce and hand-cut chips. End on brioche and date pudding with glazed banana, date syrup and banana and crème fraîche ice cream.
