At the Kumar family's central Perth eaterie the ambience has more personality than many a formula Indian restaurant, with exposed stone walls, full-drop windows and a glass panel looking into the kitchen. Indian music featuring the eponymous tabla drums plays softly. A vegetable pakora of crisp potato nuggets filled with carrots, peas and coriander seeds served with a tomato salsa-style dressing, is an appetiser for a classic main course of murgh balti, a delicate, fragrantly-spiced dish of tender chicken in a sauce of tomato, chickpeas, ginger and garlic. A full listing of vegetarian dishes is prominent on the menu. Finish with sticky gulab jamon dumplings flavoured with cardamom and rose water.
