A handsome sandstone house in a wooded setting, Knockendarroch has country-house comforts and a diminutive restaurant delivering daily-changing menus of classy modern Scottish food. It's very traditional within, with warming fires in the cooler months, ornate cornicing, chandeliers and the like, while genuine hospitality runs right through the place. Well-crafted and refined dishes include a starter of wood pigeon with chicory salad, pickled pear, beetroot, and heather honey and mustard dressing, while main courses could see loin Highland venison loin partnered with tarragon mash, squash purée, wild mushroom ragoût and juniper jus. For dessert, perhaps chilled rhubarb consommé with strawberries, blueberries and ginger beer sorbet.
