Inside this solid 300-year-old inn in the quintessentially English village of Sparsholt, all is decluttered and open plan with chunky wooden furniture and plain white walls, and the food has a suitably modern accent. So, start perhaps with salt-cured beef brisket and bacon terrine with dill pickles and brown sauce, or mackerel with lime, pomegranate, tomato and quinoa salad, guacamole and jalapeño sorbet. Mains partner roast wood pigeon breast and smoked leg ragout with pickled beetroot, potato and lovage terrine. Black crowdie and oatmeal cheesecake served with passionfruit and mango makes a great finish to an enjoyable meal.
