Inside this solid 300-year-old inn in the quintessentially English village of Sparsholt, all is decluttered and open plan with chunky wooden furniture and plain white walls, and the food has a suitably modern accent. An impressive starter balances the richness of foie gras and duck liver parfait with pear chutney and granola, and comes with a buttery home-made brioche bun. Mains partner pan-fried halibut with sweet millet, purple sprouting broccoli, samphire, and a buttermilk cream sauce laden with squid, mussels and cockles. Dessert takes mango as a theme to play with, served in an iced parfait with nougat, and as a purée, powder and frozen carpaccio with rose sorbet.
