A neighbourhood restaurant by a bus-stop on the Banbury Road, The Oxford Kitchen is a bustling, all-day venue with character to spare. Its chef, Paul Welburn worked under some of the luminaries of British cuisine, including Gary Rhodes and Richard Corrigan, and has done some TV time too. With comfortable brown banquettes inside and tables on the frontage for sunny days, he has created a relaxed setting for modern bistro eating that extends to a pair of tasting menus. Combinations are full of inventive elan, as for Cornish crab with Indian spices, compressed apple and radish, or gin-cured trout with puffed wheat, to start, ahead of breast and chestnut-stuffed leg of Cotswold White chicken with clementine jam, turnips and leeks. Presentations are exuberant and dramatic, and the balance of flavours always strong and true, through to baked rhubarb cheesecake with ginger and lemongrass, or maple syrup parfait garnished with pineapple, pecans and rosemary. The Express Lunch represents tremendous value, centred on a chef's seasonal special – pappardelle with pork ragù, pecorino and salsa verde in January – with an accompanying small glass of wine.
