Tucked away in a secluded hamlet, this rambling 16th-century inn is all brickwork, beams and wood-burner in a huge inglenook. Fine ales are on tap in the pubby bar, and all bases are covered in the food department by steaks from the grill, home-made pies - wild boar with sage and apple, perhaps - and a carte with plenty of seasonal focus. Game pâté with pickled vegetables is a great way to start, followed by roast pork belly with black pudding faggot, barley, turnips, apple jelly and mustard jus. Round off with treacle tart with ginger and honey ice cream or a rhubarb duo of Pavlova and coulis.
