Popular old inn serving good, honest food

Wines by the glass

This old brick and flint inn is the sort of pub every village should have, not just for its ales and atmosphere but for the quality of its modern British cooking. Perfectly roast local pigeon comes with a salad of beetroot, pine nuts and rocket enhanced by raspberry dressing to make a particularly effective starter. Sauces and gravies never fail to impress among main courses: one of star anise jus for confit duck leg with fondant potato and red cabbage, a rich red wine reduction for tender organic roast chicken breast with root vegetable mash, roast parsnips and kale. An excellent pudding choice might be caramel pannacotta with berry compôte.
