This Baskerville is a handsome beast, a contemporary kind of inn that offers beer and bar snacks, comfortable rooms, and a restaurant that produces serious modern British grub. The kitchen's ambitious output extends to starters of crispy fried salt and pepper squid or pan-seared wood pigeon with sloe gin jelly and pickled wild mushrooms. There are lots of sound combinations among main courses, too: an oriental-inspired slow-cooked pork belly dish, say, or Gressingham duck breast with a marmalade glaze (served with truffled mash and blackberry jus). Pub classics like steak, ale and mushroom pie and Sunday roasts play to the gallery, with comforting desserts such as plum and finger crumble.
