Sharp cooking amid idiosyncratic surroundings

Renaissance-styled Newdigate House was built in 1675. Its idiosyncratic interior mines a colonial vein, the warm orange and copper hues of the main dining room offset with oriental artefacts: Buddha heads, Indian statuary and objets d'art in vitrines. If the restaurant's name isn't enough of a hint, the cooking has a gentle East-meets-West theme. A duo of beef rib and octopus is hotted up with wasabi and cooled by seaweed salad, before sea bream arrives with smoked salmon, mussels and creamed leeks in shellfish bisque. At the end, sticky carrot cake with figs and ginger ice cream keeps the good ideas coming.
