Local cooking in an old grey moorland inn

The Youngs' old greystone country inn near Helmsley has the sweeping majesty of the North York Moors all around it, an inspiringly remote setting for walkers and gastronomes. A homely village pub atmosphere, complete with log fire, makes a cheering prospect, while the dining room offers a degree of refinement. The kitchen makes good use of local ingredients and the resulting dishes show a good amount of contemporary flair. A first-course roast pork belly arrives with scallop and black pudding, with the flavour of tamarind running through, with main courses extending to roast lamb neck served with carpaccio of shoulder meat. Finish with chocolate nemesis.
