Popular with the local farming community, The Fairfax guards the village crossroads, one of which leads to Gilling Castle, prep school for the well-known Ampleforth College. The pub's black-beamed open-plan bar and dining area leads out to a beer garden bordered by a stream. The menu presents classic British choices, typified by pan-fried king scallops with carrot and cumin purée, garden pea gel and Serrano crisp as a starter, and a main of slow-cooked belly and cheek of pork with black pudding mash, kale and cider jus. It might be hard to resist finishing with sticky toffee pudding, butterscotch sauce and cinder toffee ice cream.
