Well-wrought pub food on the edge of the Moors

This stone-built country inn at the hub of its own little Yorkshire community is all cosiness and cheer within, from the snug bar with its wood-burner to the dining room that looks onto the back garden. Well-wrought pub food based on fine prime materials, with chef's specials on the blackboard, embraces fried sea bass on pine nut fettuccine to start, or a twice-baked Lincolnshire Poacher soufflé with sweet-and-sour cherry tomatoes, and then gird your loins for three servings of lamb - a mini-rack, braised shoulder and a pie with tomatoes and rosemary - served with creamy, garlicky dauphinoise. Treacle tart and custard comes with a garnishing of kumquat.
