The old Helmsley Highflyer, which used to link Leeds and York on the Victorian coaching route, doesn't run through here any longer, but you can still make it on the moorland steam train. Your destination is a delightful architectural dog's dinner, with a stone-built Elizabethan-style inn and a building done in herringbone half-timbering flanking a more sober-looking small Georgian house. Inside, a showcase for local artworks doubles as the Gallery restaurant, with paisley-patterned and plain blue walls the setting for a new chef to show his paces. Early indications are of impeccably contemporary food with the emphasis on counterpointing flavours and textures, perhaps starting with seared scallops with a parfait of their roe, sticky black rice, and apple and yuzu gel, with retro nods here and there, as when beef carpaccio arrives with a Marie Rose-dressed crab and tomato cocktail, or in main-course duck à l'orange 70s style, with Bull's Blood (the salad leaf, not the wine) and parsnip purée. Fish may be sea bass with clam chowder and samphire, while a version of Mont Blanc, the chestnut mousse dessert, with vanilla parfait and mandarin pulp is worth forsaking the chocolate creations for. English and European cheeses come arrayed in full fig, grape and quince.
