The interior of this country inn is all twisty passageways, low beams and flagged floors, with real ales in the busy bar. It isn't unknown for locals to dine here three or four times a week, returning for seared scallops with cauliflower and tonka bean purée, or venison and black pudding Scotch egg with parsnip and apple remoulade. Main courses are equally innovative, among them baked cod fillet with Puy lentil, turnip and pancetta stew, cavolo nero and honey-roast parsnips, or taleggio-stuffed chicken breast with polenta and sage, roast figs and pesto. Don't overlook the house classics or puddings like cherry cheesecake with popcorn sauce.
