A private path leads through woodland to the beach from this north Norfolk hotel, a substantial white Georgian house partly covered in creepers. In the restaurant, it's all about clear, fresh flavours. Scallops are given a novel accompaniment of a paprika-spiked risotto of parsnips, peas and lime, while local quail comes with wilted kale (from the garden) and poached pears. Main courses are also carefully considered: seasonal roast pheasant with fondant potatoes and blackberry jus, for instance, and pan-seared sea bass fillet with prawn and mussel velouté and chive mash. Five Norfolk cheeses with quince jelly are an alternative to desserts along the lines of chocolate and marmalade bread-and-butter pudding.
