Hard at work in a revamped old inn just outside Abergavenny is Stephen Terry, a chef with a wealth of experience at the sharp end of the restaurant biz. The food is unpretentious, mood-enhancing stuff such as a starter of meatloaf (made from Welsh pedigree pork) with melted Swiss cheese, onion marmalade and pickles, or a salad of hot chorizo and Castelfranco radicchio. Dry-aged rib-eye is a superb piece of meat cooked just right (served with triple-cooked chips and melting Hardwick butter), while another main course matches shoulder of Brecon lamb with deep-fried polenta and salsa verde. Set lunches and Sunday lunch are a cut above the norm.
