On a bend in the Usk, with river views, this restaurant with rooms is surrounded by well-tended gardens. The property dates back 200 years, so expect the usual beams and fireplaces, while the two-level restaurant has a rustic charm. The kitchen is assiduous about its sourcing and its menu ticks some cosmopolitan boxes. To start, crab mayonnaise is partnered with peanut brittle and chilli jelly, while two can share a seafood platter. Main courses include stimulating fish options such as brill with curried lentils or Cornish pollack with charred leek and mussel chowder, or go for slow-roasted 28-day aged flat rib of Welsh beef.
