Secreted away down a smart little street just off the King’s Road, you endearingly ring the bell at VBL to gain entry to the lovely Georgian townhouse restaurant as though it were still a private home, and, once inside, any preconceptions about Indian cuisine are blown aside. VBL is the reincarnation of Vineet Bhatia’s previous Rasoi restaurant, but re-set with a new name, modern makeover and offering just a dinner-only ‘experience’ tasting menu (plus a vegetarian version). A trailblazer among nouveau Indian chefs for many years, Bhatia is certainly back with a bang. Inspired by his Mumbai heritage and global travels, you can expect evolved, refined, palate-tingling treats that fizz with originality and innovation. Open with unabashed panache via ‘smoked prawn chaat and lime soup’. Menu descriptions are brief, like ‘duck korma’ for instance, with the cheery, knowledgeable, professional service team introducing dishes at the table. Other offerings like ‘beet foie gras’ might marry silky foie gras (spiced with cardamom, chilli and fennel) with its beetroot element arriving as a featherlight macaroon and accompanying pineapple and saffron chutney. Dessert dishes, like ‘chocolate cure’ or a palate-cleansing ‘clementine kulfi’ play their part too, while the finale salvo of petit fours delivers a half-dozen sweet treats.
