In the Old Town, just a short stroll from Clapham Common tube, Adam Byatt's stellar neighbourhood restaurant is a good reason to move to SW4. The outdoor terrace and cool, understated tones inside, complete with open-to-view kitchen, are very much what modern London dining is about, watched over by a slick service team who are all wised-up about the menu and maintain a relaxed mood throughout proceedings. The inventive modern European cooking has its feet firmly grounded in French classicism, with careful balanced dishes that impress with their invention and satisfy with their deceptive simplicity. Crispy trotters make an impressive opener, with zingy sauce gribiche, cider mayonnaise and crackling. Main-course brings sensational wild turbot, given simple Bonne Femme treatment to let its quality shine, alongside fresh morels and silky creamed potatoes pointed up with wild garlic. Dessert is salt caramel heaven, in the form of wobbly custard tart and intense ice cream.
