Adam Byatt's neighbourhood restaurant in the Old Town part of sprawling Clapham, just off the north-east corner of the Common, is well into its second decade now. The outdoor terrace and cool, clean monochrome tones inside, complete with open-to-view kitchen, are very much what modern London dining is about, with a light-touch, unstuffy service approach adding to the appeal. Limitlessly inventive modern European cooking is the order of the day, with careful judgment of balance notable throughout. The four-course dinner menu might start with an opener of bigeye tuna alongside crab salad, pickled cucumber and avocado, before progressing to a crispy pig's ear with sauce gribiche and crackling. Main-course meats are sensational, as in the tender, deeply flavoured Balmoral venison that comes with vivid pumpkin purée, salt-baked quince, toasted hazelnuts and an eloquently rich jus, while dessert could be a salt caramel outing, in the dual form of wobbly custard tart and intense ice cream, or perhaps rum-soaked baba with citrus salad. The vegetarian rendition might take in gorgonzola risotto with pear and walnuts, and then chanterelle pappardelle with aged parmesan.
