A short stroll from Richmond Park, The Victoria is co-owned by TV chef Paul Merrett and the kitchen's modern British output impresses with its ambition and execution. A first course Loch Duart salmon sashimi is spot on, topped with shallot and chilli crunch and served with ketjapmanis (an Indonesian sauce) and pickled cucumbers. Among main course options, chargrilled leg of lamb comes with Middle Eastern accompaniments, South Devon rib-eye steak arrives with béarnaise sauce and 'thrice cooked' chips, and pan-roasted rainbow trout is partnered with cockles, bacon and monk's beard. Finish with dark chocolate shortbread with milk chocolate mousse and nut brownie ice cream.
