This classic Victorian corner pub in East Dulwich is an inviting prospect with its clubby wood panelling, racing-green leather banquettes and scrubbed-wood tables and chairs. A quick glance over the menu shows that this kitchen prizes seasonal British produce. Home-cured salt-cod fritters with spiced tomato sauce and aïoli make a straight-talking opener, or you might kick off with smoked eel with beetroot, damson jelly, horseradish and mustard cress. Next up, grilled rabbit leg comes with a punchy stew of braised ganxet beans, chorizo, kale and salt-baked celeriac, and for pud, an inventive take on the trifle theme brings terrific English pink winter rhubarb with Swiss roll, amaretti and sherry.
