The old Shoreditch Town Hall with its pilasters and pediments belonged by the 1960s to a past era of municipal bureaucratic grandeur, but has been reborn today as an arts venue staging theatrical productions and contemporary dance, as well as one of east London's vanguard culinary operations. The bare-boarded floor and unclothed tables in a white, high-ceilinged space have a certain dignity still, but it's the cutting-edge production of the kitchen that excites most notice. A multi-course taster is the principal business, though there is a shorter five-course deal for weekday evenings. If you're not up for one of the wine pairings, try a selection of ambient teas to go with the dishes.
