Bustling Venetian-style bacaro in the heart of Soho

This pint-sized space is constantly rammed, and you can't book in the evenings, so expect to queue beside the bar with its high stools for dining. The decor is pared-back, all elbow-to-elbow tables, exposed brick and floorboards. Food-wise, the deal is affordably priced, Italian-style small plates sent out quick-fire. It's simple, boldly-flavoured stuff: expect crispy seafood fritto misto, roast belly pork with braised apple, or lamb and mint meatballs. Italian wines come by glass, carafe and bottle, while a bijou basement Campari bar gets going at 5.30pm. There are five sibling Polpos in central London, as well as branches in Brighton, and Harvey Nichols Knightsbridge and Leeds.
