Small, intimate and owner-run, this old-school French restaurant feels like it has been around for decades. As befits a traditional French restaurant, the wine list is hefty in both range and price and the food displays confident cooking skills, high-quality ingredients and the type of heavy saucing you rarely encounter this side of the Channel. Ribbon-thin sautéed calamari with vegetable julienne and confit fennel makes for a flying start, followed by grouse pie with spinach, mushrooms and a seriously intense grouse sauce. For fans of theatrical tableside service, the showstopping canard de Rouen à la pressé is worth a blowout. Leave room for classic puds such as tarte Tatin or Grand Marnier soufflé.
