'Apples and Pears' looks a riot of colour and conviviality on its Soho corner. At ground-floor level is a café area, but the main dining goes on downstairs in a dynamic, russet-walled basement room. Italian sharing plates are the principal draw to start, with San Daniele ham and gnocchi, deep-fried squid and smoked aïoli, or beef carpaccio with pecorino among the offerings. Then it's braised veal shin with wild mushrooms and polenta, with perhaps an intermediate pasta dish or risotto to bridge the gap. To finish, how about a maraschino cherry sundae with blackcurrant and vanilla ice creams, or mascarpone cheesecake with white chocolate and wild berries.
