TV star Giorgio Locatelli's culinary career began by the shore of Lake Comabbio in the Lombardy region of northern Italy, a provenance that attunes him so precisely to one of the prevalent currents of British gastronomy. Italian classical cooking, gently modernised but staying true to its principles of honesty and simplicity, will never lack for devotees. Curving booth seating in stone-coloured leather, etched glass screens and mirrors make for an ambience of refined civility, naturally, but the generously proportioned tables are designed with convivial family dining in mind. Traditionally structured menus open with compendious antipasti salads, before pasta makes its appearance via lobster linguine, or turnip-top orecchiette. Principal dishes command the attention with majestic fish – roast black bream in bagna cauda with wild chicory – or tender veal kidneys on a stew of lentils with a cloud of puréed potato. At the finish line, tradition (wine-poached pears with cinnamon ice cream) vies with a modern Britalian tendency, perhaps Earl Grey pannacotta with poached Yorkshire rhubarb and tarragon shortbread, for the toughest decision of all.
