Across the street on the same little back lane as the Atherton flagship, Pollen Street, the Little Social is a more obviously chattery, clattery venue for London's young at heart, where a cheerful racket of piped pop is fed through ceiling speakers over a dark-panelled bistro-like space. The menu items are of heritage English and French dishes, presented with honest, almost insolent simplicity in portions to assuage the ravenous. There's a take on steak tartare made with Cumbrian bavette, gaufrette potatoes and a yolk of quail egg to begin, as well as a brioche bun slathered with avocado crush and piled to toppling with crab and chive mayonnaise. An enterprising pair might then rock on with 40-day Buccleugh côte de boeuf cooked on the bone, perhaps with sides of horseradish mash and tenderstem broccoli, or go their separate ways for roasted sole meunière, and a cottage pie that comes in a cast-iron pot with a bourguignon bottom layer of stunning richness under a wafer-thin potato coverlet. Finish in gargantuan style with maple-glazed doughnuts filled with baked Bramley apple, cinnamon and port in crème anglaise sprinkled with cinnamon sugar, or go with the fine Anglo-French artisan cheeses from La Fromagerie.
