British produce is celebrated zealously at Franklins, an exemplary neighbourhood eatery that combines the virtues of a pubby bar and a buzzy bistro at the rear that's all exposed brick, bare floorboards, big Victorian mirrors, and paper-clothed tables with an open view into the kitchen. The kitchen’s no-nonsense approach produces a big-hearted starter of confit duck and prune terrine, followed by a straight-up plateful of lamb shoulder with pearl barley, curly kale and carrots, or hearty, no-frills ideas such as red-legged partridge with celeriac, bacon and chestnuts. A knockout treacle tart with quince and crème fraîche keeps pudding firmly in the comfort zone.
