The anonymous grey frontage and stripped-back interior neutrality of bare tables, pendant lights and concrete floor are very much of the moment at this high-flying venue near the Hatton Garden jewellery quarter and Leather Lane market. Mark Jarvis’s approach is all about celebrating splendid British ingredients – the clue’s in the name – so expect cooking that matches contemporary creativity with a colourful, high-impact look on the plate. If time is tight at lunch, slot in the three-course option, otherwise settle in for one of the tasters – it’s all defined by a deft lightness of touch but without reining in on big flavours. Home-made sourdough with yeasted butter and punchy intros of smoked haddock on a nori cracker and a cone of duck liver parfait and walnut get the tastebuds dancing for cured salmon with fish broth and croûtons. Main course brings premium Goosnargh chicken with chestnut and celeriac, its richness lifted by pickled trompette mushrooms to produce something remarkable. A pre-dessert of cheese and onion on malt loaf leads on to a finale of sticky toffee pudding with lightly smoked caramel.
