With the restaurant’s 30th anniversary in September 2018, Harry and Caroline Hallam have surely proved you don’t need a vast dining room or bespoke building to provide top notch cooking to discerning guests – when you visit Harry’s Place you’re visiting their home, a handsome old converted farmhouse, and eating in their dining room. There’s space for just 10 guests at the three tables, so this is an intimate experience – and make sure you book – especially at weekends. Caroline expertly takes care of front-of-house duties, while Harry’s in the kitchen, his classically-inspired, hand-written menus offering a couple of choices at each course, always beginning with a soup, plus maybe fillet of roast Scottish salmon, served with vodka crème fraîche, and a wonderfully uplifting relish of mango, avocado, lime, ginger and basil. You might have local breed Lincoln Red beef fillet for a main course, perhaps, served with horseradish mayonnaise, spiced apricots, flame raisins and red onion, before concluding with chocolate mousse, mascarpone and blackberries, or prune and Armagnac ice cream with passionfruit.
