Skilful modern cooking in a smartly modernised village inn

The 21st-century incarnation of this thriving gastro pub is seen in a smart interior, some natty bedrooms and a focus on food. That said, real ale is part of the plan, and a few pub classics, such as beer-battered cod and chips, remain on the menu. The kitchen turns out some lively stuff, such as goats' cheese soufflé with spiced apple and candied walnuts, or venison carpaccio with beetroot textures and parmesan to start. Impressive main courses may take in pork belly and black pudding roulade with crackling, Swiss chard, rösti and apple and celeriac velouté, or fish pie with green bean beignets. Finish with salted caramel pannacotta.
