An atmospheric gem in historic Rochester

Wines by the glass

On a corner of Rochester's high street, the castle and cathedral visible through side windows, Topes occupies a building spanning the 15th to 17th centuries, and could host a period drama with its wonky, sagging timbers. Inside is all linen fold panels and carved black beams, the patina of age relieved by light colours, uncluttered modern decor and a relaxing mood. Excellent Kentish produce underpins a starter of pigeon breast with parsnip purée, chanterelles and pickled blueberries, before main course brings on cod with charred baby gem and feta. A finale of apricot and walnut tart with maple pecan ice cream concludes things in style.
